How to photograph a speaker event

Washington, DC is built on events—and we specialize in capturing them at Kalorama Studios.

I outlined down 4 simple tips and best practices that the Kalorama Studios team uses for every speaker event:

#1 — Know the Run of Show — Make sure your photographer knows the run of show and any specific moments that you want to highlight. Coordinate with your photographer specific moments like posed handshakes on stage or off-stage to happen before and after a speaker speaks.

#2 — Observe a Speaker's Personality — Photography is all about capturing the energy and the moment. By observing a speaker's personality, you can better predict hand movements and facial expressions.

#3 — Standardize Your Process — By knowing all the angles that you are trying to get and building this into your process, you can estimate the amount of time you need to work the room, especially as you wait for the speaker to do the movement or expression you are looking for.

#4 — Take Audience Candids — Before, during, and after the speaker speaks are crucial moments for your audience and how they interact with each other and the speaker. Stick around and photograph the speaker interacting with the audience...people are going to surround them and want to talk to them.

Looking to elevate photography coverage in-house (aka you want one of your comms team members to take photos), we also run coaching mentorship to help them elevate their game.
